Preparation for Childbirth Classes
Childbirth classes are a chance for expectant families to prepare for the upcoming labor and delivery. These classes teach about what to expect during pregnancy as well as how to cope during the labor and delivery process. Husbands and partners are encouraged to join. Boot Camp for New Dads
Our Boot Camp for New Dads program helps train new fathers to be experienced dads. This three-hour workshop is taught by experienced instructors. Veteran dads bring their own babies to practice with, and new dads leave with confidence in their ability to be great dads.

Post-partum and Discharge Class
Discharge classes are designed to provide information for new mothers in order to assist them with beginning their own routines for a new baby. The class will help mothers understand how to care for a new baby at home. The class emphasizes the importance of well baby checks and familiarize moms with the follow-up care system for themselves and their babies.
There is no cost for this class. Classes are held daily in English and Spanish. Please contact the nurse on the post-partum unit for more information.
Lactation Services
Parkland has a team of breastfeeding specialists who provide assistance to new mothers while in the hospital. This team of specialists includes breastfeeding educators and board-certified lactation consultants to assist infants and mothers with routine breastfeeding and the occasional complications that may occur. There is no cost for this service. To arrange for a visit from a member of our lactation team, please contact the nurse on the post-partum unit.
Breastfeeding Classes NEW!
Parkland offers a monthly breastfeeding class for expectant parents. Classes, held at the hospital and in the community, are taught by board-certified lactation consultants. The classes provide education so that families can make informed decisions and learn how to access the support needed to be successful in breastfeeding.

Gestational Diabetes Class
This class is designed for women who are diagnosed with diabetes while they are pregnant. Registered nurses provide basic information about diabetes. Dieticians provide information about nutritional considerations. Also taught, if prescribed by the provider, are sessions on how to self-check blood sugar levels and how to self-administer insulin. There is no cost for these classes.
Empty Arms Bereavement Program
The Empty Arms Bereavement Program is designed for families whose babies have died at Parkland. We recognize that grief is a normal healthy response to loss and will promote bereavement care to families through a professional team approach. The program aims to help patients and their families begin to cope with grief and loss and meet bereavement needs of the patient and family during the initial crisis of the loss of their baby. In addition, the program conducts follow up through the first year after the loss of the baby.
There is no cost for this service. The nurse on the post-partum unit should be contacted for a referral if a family experiences the death of a baby.
